Before coming to Cornell, Giannelis was a post-doctoral associate at the Center for Fundamental Materials Research (1985-86) and the Composites Center at Michigan State University (1986-87). He won the Dean's Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 1994. He is a member of several scientific societies including American Chemical Society, American Ceramic Society, Materials Research Society, and Sigma Xi. He serves on the Editorial Boards of Chemistry of Materials and Macromolecules. Professor Giannelis is the director of Materials Science and Engineering and the Emmanuel P. Giannelis Research Group.
The subjects of his current research have been the design and synthesis of materials with nanometer dimensions. Materials with dimensions in the range of 1 to 10 nm exhibit novel electronic, optical, magnetic and chemical properties due to their extremely small dimensions
